A word of this app's own

Most eclipse literature says "path of totality" for both the region and its centre, and relies on context to tell them apart. This app draws them as separate layers — a filled band, a centre line, two limits — and needed a name for the band on its own. Corridor is that name.

It is worth knowing that it is not standard vocabulary. Searching for it elsewhere will find buildings. The concept it names is entirely standard; only the label is local.

Why draw it as a region

Because the question a reader actually has is "am I in it", and that is a question about an area. A centre line answers "where is it best", which is the second question. Drawing the band first makes the map answer them in the order they get asked.

The corridor layer is traced at full internal tangency — the app bisects for the ground points where the Moon's disc exactly contains the Sun's — so being inside it is the strong claim, that the eclipse is central where you stand. It is emphatically not the threshold the countries panel uses: that lists every country reaching 0.5% obscuration somewhere, which takes in most of a hemisphere. A country in the panel is a country the eclipse touches; a place in the corridor is a place that sees the whole thing.

The layer also draws the ticks along the centre line, which are UTC times: where the shadow is at each moment.
